I’ve always had a soft spot for ladybugs, and I guess you can say they’re my favorite “animal”. Long before I knew they were garden heroes, they were just magical little visitors that seemed to show up at just the right moment.

Growing with Ladybugs

Some of my earliest and most vivid memories involve ladybugs. When I was around eight, my family stayed in a little cottage in Rocky Point, Mexico. One morning, I stepped outside to find thousands of ladybugs clustered on the walls and windows. It felt like something out of a dream, or maybe a fairy tale.

Not long after that, I remember spotting another ladybug swarm while visiting the Grand Canyon. They had gathered on a bush near the edge of the trail—so many that the green of the leaves was barely visible beneath the red and black.

Back home, I even had ladybugs painted on my bedroom wall. They made me feel like I had a little piece of that magic with me all the time.

Why I Still Love Them

These days, I still get excited when I see ladybugs. As a budding gardener, I’ve come to truly appreciate just how helpful these little beetles can be.

Ladybugs are natural pest controllers. They love to feast on aphids, scale insects, and other pests that can wreak havoc on my plants. I’ve learned to spot their eggs tucked underneath leaves, a sign that help is on the way.

Just this week, after battling a wave of aphids on my pepper plant, I noticed a single ladybug crawling along its leaves. It felt like such a hopeful moment, like the cavalry had finally arrived. Now, just a few days later, I’ve seen more ladybugs hanging around, and my plants are bouncing back beautifully. It’s one of those small-but-mighty reminders of how nature takes care of itself, with a little patience and the right visitors.

I’ve even made an effort to plant things they love like dill, fennel, and marigolds, just to make them feel more at home. When they show up, I know my garden’s in good hands!

From lovely childhood moments to practical garden allies, ladybugs have been a consistently charming presence in my life. I like to think they’ve always been looking out for me in their own tiny, spotted way.
